Starting karate at just 3 years old and kickboxing at 5, he displayed exceptional dedication and skill, achieving his black belt by the age of 17. His journey didn’t stop there—Stephen delved into martial arts weaponry, mastering techniques with a sword.

As an advanced self-defense instructor, Stephen specializes in teaching practical and effective strategies for defending against weapons, including knives and firearms. Under 18’s Classes
Our Mayo Shin Do karate classes focus on blending traditional and modern techniques to develop strong foundational skills. As they progress, they’ll refine their techniques through kata (forms) and kumite (sparring), while also gaining self-defense skills.

Rob Thornton

Rob is a 1st Dan in Combat Karate and an accomplished judo competitor, with experience in both Kodokan and Kosen judo. He also trains with the UK Kudo squad, gaining valuable insights into the martial art. His strong foundation in ground work comes from his training in these traditional arts, making him a versatile and skilled practitioner, blending the striking techniques of karate with the grappling and groundwork from judo and Kudo.

Designed for younger students, this class focuses on building a strong foundation in grappling and ground techniques through engaging and age-appropriate drills. Stay-and-Play Classes

Our Stay-and-Play classes are designed to offer a relaxed and enjoyable environment where parents and children can spend time together while engaging in light martial arts training. The focus is on creating a fun, supportive atmosphere that allows parents to learn some basic techniques and improve their fitness, while their children can play in a safe, supervised space.

Training is less intense, adapting to the comfort and engagement levels of both parents and children. Parents can practice moves and techniques whenever their child is happy playing in our soft play area, or willing to join in, Our aim is to create a stress-free experience where parents can enjoy themselves as much as the children do. Our Stay & Play service is a great way for families to bond, stay active, and introduce kids to martial arts in a relaxed setting.

SEN Classes

Our SEN classes are designed to provide a calm, supportive environment that is much quieter and more relaxed than our regular sessions.

We focus on the individual needs of each participant, whether child or adult, understanding that some may prefer to start by engaging in quiet play or activities, such as exploring soft play equipment in the corner, while they adjust.

The pace and structure are flexible, ensuring that everyone feels comfortable and supported as they gradually become ready to engage more fully with the rest of the class when they are ready.

What Led Me Here?

Life has a way of steering us onto unexpected paths. I’m the proud owner of Porta-Bull Events, CK Castles, and Cheltenham Spa Hot Tub Hire, but a twist of fate—two separate incidents, in fact—left me with a broken heel bone and ankle. As soon as I could bear weight again, I felt a strong pull to reclaim my mobility and reignite my passion for martial arts. What started as teaching friends and helping them get back on track soon blossomed into something much larger than I could have imagined.

Today, I’m proud to offer both group classes and private sessions in Thornbury, catering to all levels of experience—from beginners taking their first steps into martial arts to seasoned fighters looking to refine their skills.

As a parent myself, juggling fitness with raising a preschooler is a challenge I know well. My 3-year-old son is often with me at the gym, making new friends and enjoying our stay-and-play services. These sessions are a more relaxed parent-and-child gathering, where parents can learn a few martial arts techniques while their children engage in play. Training adapts to the children’s engagement, ensuring a balance of learning and fun.

My Journey

My kickboxing story began at 11, training at the WUMA headquarters in Charlton Kings, Cheltenham. Competing at tournaments like the British Open and European Open, I secured podium finishes in every event, earning Fighter of the Year in 2002. However, like many, I faced setbacks, temporarily stepping away from the sport in my late teens.

A pivotal moment came years later when I returned to training at MSD Evolution, reigniting my passion. This led me to Thailand, where I trained intensively at Tiger Muay Thai—the global hot spot for UFC fighters seeking elite training—along with KYN Muay Thai (now Phoenix Muay Thai) and Top Team Phuket. My time there included daily six-hour training sessions, pushing myself to new limits under world-class fighters and coaches.

Returning to the UK, I began instructing Muay Thai and kickboxing classes at MSD Evolution, a role that allowed me to share my passion and expertise with others.
